so a post wandered across my dash where someone had gotten a transphobic butthole commenting on their fic, and they were asking their followers go tell this person to kill themselves
and i said, have you considered telling people to kill themselves is an abusive tactic and maybe the proportionate response would be to delete the idiotic comment [alas blocking was not available as the coward hadn't logged in]
to their credit, this person blocked me rather than sending me abuse (though if they replied, I can't see it because they blocked, oh well)
but like. it kinda bothers me that someone i follow thought this was cool to reblog. i thought me and my mutuals were on the same page here. we don't tell people to kill themselves. we especially do not incite others to send someone a slew of such messages. we tell bigoted idiots off, block them when possible, report them if we can nail what they said to a hate speech or threat policy.
we do not tell people to kill themselves.
if you think it's acceptable to send someone a "kys" message for literally any reason please go ahead and block me, I don't want to know you.

PSA regarding tumblrā€™s latest Censorship Nightmare
For those of you who havenā€™t seen this announcement, tumblr recently made some changes to the iOS version of the app, purportedly to comply with Appleā€™s content guidelines. These changes took effect on Dec 21, starting in version 22.5.1 of the iOS app. As some of you may recall, Appleā€™s strict guidelines were the driving force for the infamous Great Purge of 2018, which coincidentally also happened around this time of year, but it seems banning all of the female-presenting nipples wasnā€™t good enough for Apple.
Below is a summary of the important changes. Note that these changes technically ONLY affect those using the iOS app. If youā€™re accessing tumblr through a different app or operating system (Google Chrome, Android app,Ā etc) it wonā€™t affect you directly but it willĀ affect your followers who use iOS so you should definitely be aware of it.
The list of banned tags has been expanded. As before, thereā€™s no way to know which words or phrases have been banned until you try searching for them, in which case youā€™ll either get no search results or the following message:Ā ā€œThis content has been hidden because of potentially suggestive or explicit content.ā€ You may think this doesnā€™t concern you if you donā€™t post explicit material, but do not make the mistake of expecting theĀ banned tagsĀ to be logical or reasonable. I've already encountered multiple completely innocuous posts (random fandom gifsets) that seem to be hidden on iOS for no discernible reason.
Blogs that have been flagged as explicit can no longer be viewed. Previously, flagged blogs just had their posts hidden from searches, but if you knew the username you could still visit it after clicking through a warning about sensitive content. Now you canā€™t access it at all.
Likes and reblogs from blogs that have been flagged will no longer show up in your notes. This one wonā€™t affect most peopleā€™s user experience as much as the others, but it does mean you may be missing notes. Itā€™s unclear if likes and reblogs from flagged blogs will still count towards the overall note total (and only be missing from the activity feed and note viewer) but I suspect thatā€™s the case.
THE BIG ONE: ANY POST TAGGED WITH A BANNED TAG WILL NO LONGER SHOW UP ON YOUR DASHBOARD. Previously, if you tagged a post with a banned word or phrase (even if the words were used inside another tag), that post would not show up in searches, but your followers would still be able to see it on their dashboard. Now those posts are hidden from your own followers as well. This includes both original posts and reblogs. And if that wasnā€™t bad enough, hereā€™s the real kicker: even if you donā€™t tag something with one of the banned words, if the OP used a banned tag, any reblogs of that post will not show up on anyoneā€™s dashboard (on the iOS app). The only saving grace here, and I hate to even call it that, is that the blocked posts are still visible if you visit a blog directly or if you have post notificationsĀ turned on.
As usual, tumblr was extremely unclear and evasive about all of this in their official announcement. Not surprising, of course, since if more people were aware of these new draconian tactics I canā€™t imagine there wouldnā€™t be more of an uproar about it. Tumblr claims that these changes are somewhat temporary and that they are currently working on something that will allow for a less restricted iOS experience, but they refuse to say what that something is and when it will be implemented. And letā€™s just say, considering their track record, Iā€™m not hopeful.
All of this is horrible and infuriating for many reasons, but the worst part is how insanely counterproductive it is to creating theĀ ā€œsafeā€ environment tumblr (or more specifically Apple) supposedly wants.
Tags have always been used for both blog organization and filtering purposes. Tagging posts with triggers and content warnings is a common practice that gives users the ability to filter out content they may find upsetting or just donā€™t donā€™t want to see for whatever reason.Ā By choosing to ban a bunch of unlisted ā€œsensitive contentā€ tags, all theyā€™re doing is encouraging people who want to share that kind of content to come up with alternative less well-known tags or simply not tag that content at all anymore if they want it to show up on their followerā€™s dashboards, thereby making it more likely for someone to encounter it when they didnā€™t want to.
So really, with all of the alleged concern for safety and ā€œprotecting the children,ā€ all theyā€™ve done is make tumblr less safe for everyone. Typical.
UPDATE (Jan 11, 2022):Ā An optional toggle setting now exists to disable these changes.Ā Please follow this tutorial to allowĀ ā€œsensitive contentā€ on the iOS app.

the devil in me, part ii
Back to writing these two, inevitably, at long last. This is for the lovely anon who dropped by and mentioned this one, despite it having been years since the last post. This is slightly trigger heavy, so sorry if the triggers contain spoilers, but people's mental health comes first so they can choose whether or not to engage with the content.
This is part of a series. You can find part one here.
pairing: Marcus Flint x Oliver Wood
premise: When Marcus wakes again in the endless white of St Mungo's, Oliver is still there, and his wand is still gone. Marcus thinks it's about debts owed, or at least, that's what he's trying to tell himself. Whatever other reasons might keep Oliver Wood at his bedside aren't remotely within a framework he's equipped to handle. [possible triggers: severe PTSD, hospitals, battle situations, Legilimency, implied invasion of the mind, implied intention not to survive]
When he wakes, one needle is back in his arm and Marcusā€™ first inclination is to be pissed off about it. Of course it is. Being angry is the best alternative, sublimation for all of the other emotions he should be feeling and isnā€™t. He doesnā€™t need any St Mungoā€™s trained therapist to tell him about that, mainly because itā€™s deliberate on his part.
ā€œFor fuckā€™s sake,ā€ he mutters. ā€œI donā€™t want painkiller withdrawal on top of everything else. The dosage has to be sky-high for me not to be feeling anything.ā€
ā€œSo youā€™d rather have the searing amount of pain that makes you pass out within minutes instead? Youā€™re right; being a masochist is a much better idea.ā€
He closes his eyes. ā€œWhy are you still here, again?ā€
ā€œWaiting for you to take your head out of your arse, though it seems Iā€™ll be in for a long wait.ā€ The tart rejoinder in a lovely, rolling Scottish brogue that he instinctively wants to wrap himself in doesnā€™t help his temper. Neither does the fact that Oliver is still too earnest despite the familiar barb in the words, as though he thinks he owes Marcus something. The stubborn set to his jaw is familiar too, viewed more than once when facing him on a Quidditch pitch.
It makes Marcus want to push him away for his own safety, because donā€™t you know what I am? Instead, his gaze is sulky, as though heā€™s a teenager again in a way he hasnā€™t been in years, and itā€™s solely fixed on Oliver. ā€œI donā€™t like you, and I donā€™t want you here,ā€ he says, and if thatā€™s not the biggest lie heā€™s told in the past couple of years, heā€™s not entirely sure what is.
Oliver shrugs. ā€œThatā€™s too bad, Flint, because Iā€™m not going anywhere.ā€ Heā€™s wearing a poloneck jumper, just like he used to at school when it got to winter weekends out of uniform, and Marcus has the fleeting, horrifying thought that maybe it covers bruises or worse. A second thought just as horrifying resurfaces: he still doesnā€™t have his wand.
That thought makes him abruptly change the subject. ā€œAlright, Wood, since youā€™re here, be a good boy and tell me why I donā€™t have my wand.ā€ Itā€™s not a question. He doesnā€™t phrase it as one. To punctuate it and make it clear heā€™s not asking, Marcus opts to verbally twist the knife for good measure. ā€œYou owe me. Thatā€™s why youā€™re here, right? To settle the debt. So start talking.ā€ Thatā€™s not a question either, because why else Oliver might be there is more than he can possibly handle getting into.
Oliverā€™s (Woodā€™s, damn it) expression darkens momentarily, as though heā€™s about to pick a fight. Marcus wants him to, because at least that would be normal, but he sees it the moment that Oliver registers heā€™s in a hospital bed all over again, sees the way his gaze turns pained and then the shutters draw closed again so heā€™s at a loss for what the other is thinking. He doesnā€™t like it. Oliver was always an open book, no filter, no love lost on his side of the equation. He doesnā€™t know what this new thing is.
He clears his throat brusquely. ā€œWell?ā€
Oliver sighs. ā€œTheyā€™re concerned about your mental state as well. Thatā€™s why you donā€™t have your wand. They thought you might try something youā€™d regret.ā€
Fury is, of course, the quickest and most reliable reaction. ā€œSo they thought theyā€™d improve things by taking away the only piece of autonomy I had available to me for months? Thatā€™s genius thinking, that is. Who do I need to see to recommend them for promotion?ā€
Oliverā€™s lips twitch briefly then, clearly catching the sarcasm, but at the same time seemingly unable to smile at it. Thatā€™s fine, because itā€™s not funny at all.
Marcus exhales a sharp sigh, one thatā€™s less exasperated by this point than unimpressed. ā€œI suppose they thought Iā€™d curse the whole place down, eh?ā€ This time, it is a question, and the smile that goes with it isnā€™t genuine, itā€™s mean and sharp-edged. Itā€™s an echo of all the ugly things that have stained his hands and his mind, and it occurs to him that throughout that, Oliver has been the only good thing, a pure thing heā€™d constructed for himself, a secret he kept that was sometimes the only reason he didnā€™t give in altogether. Now thatā€™s done and itā€™s back to reality.
To his consternation, Oliver shakes his head, as though he can sense what Marcus is thinking. ā€œNo one believes that after the battle. You threw yourself in the way of someone that would have been dead if you hadnā€™t, without knowing whether youā€™d survive.ā€ The words seemed hard for Oliver to speak, as though it was like a demon lived in his throat for as long as they sat there. ā€œThey didnā€™t know if you were going to pull through, the first couple of days.ā€
An eye-roll is Marcusā€™ first response to that, and he averts his gaze from Oliver then. ā€œThat was sort of the bloody point, Wood.ā€ The words fall heavily in the room between them, but this time itā€™s not out of malice, itā€™s from defeat, an admission that he should have kept to himself. The anger hasnā€™t emptied its well yet, but for the time being, itā€™s quiet, a savage thing made somnolent again by the fact that he can feel the needle in his arm start to pour more potion into him. Presumably, itā€™s going to knock him out eventually.
Oliverā€™s own exhale is shaken, as though Marcus has punched him square in the solar plexus and it hurts, badly. After all these months of silence, itā€™s as though the casually cruel words aiming to drive him away are doing more damage than even the war has managed to. ā€œFlint, you canā€™t justā€¦ā€
Marcus wants to sit up again but the potion, damn it, feels like itā€™s got him pinned in place. That makes him edgy, makes him feel the cold sweat of panic beginning to prick, and he absolutely will not have a panic attack of any kind in front of an audience. He swallows hard, and Oliver seems unable to finish the sentence. It hangs there between them, unfinished.
Thatā€™s the moment that the door creaks open and the healer walks in, oblivious to the conversation that had been happening beforehand. Oliver leans back in the chair beside Marcusā€™ bed.
Marcusā€™ lip curls just slightly. ā€œCome to check Iā€™m still breathing?ā€ he asks snidely. ā€œSorry to disappoint. You can go now, your duty is done.ā€
The healer does no such thing. ā€œIā€™d hoped youā€™d be asleep by now,ā€ he says with a tsk tsk sound that reminds Marcus of the teachers from school whenever he didnā€™t do his homework correctly. It does nothing to endear the man to him at all. ā€œEvidently we need to increase your dosage. You shouldnā€™t have ripped those needles out of your arm as soon as you did, but Mr Wood tells me you have a remarkably high tolerance for pain.ā€
That causes Marcusā€™ gaze to narrow in Oliverā€™s direction, and itā€™s as accusing as it gets.
Oliver, to his credit (the little of it that Marcus is currently willing to give) doesnā€™t look away. ā€œIā€™ve been in the Hospital Wing with you multiple times,ā€ is the reminder that unexpectedly arrives, softer than heā€™s ever deserved. ā€œYou never took your painkillers. You always cast Evanesco.ā€
On the one hand, Marcusā€™ glare only intensifies, because Oliverā€™s just ratted him out to the healer. On the other, what does it even mean that Oliver remembers; how there seems to be something dark and sad behind his gaze ever since a few minutes ago. It doesnā€™t correlate with his real life knowledge of Wood, only the fantasy version he constructed in his head to have a reason to go on, and Marcus is fully aware of how incredibly unhealthy that was and is.
Itā€™s only the healerā€™s voice that interrupts their charged stare, clearly ready to go for another lecture. ā€œWell, there will be no hiding painkillers here. What were you thinking, taking those out? Did you just not realise the degree of damage you took?ā€ It isnā€™t an indignant pair of questions, instead asked with the tone of someone who wants to understand the subject they are studying. It presses all of the wrong buttons for Marcus, and he endures it in silence until he canā€™t.
This is the moment he snaps. But it isnā€™t like every other time heā€™s lost his temper. No, this is different; his voice is surprisingly quiet and unsteady when he speaks. ā€œWhy does everyone want to know what Iā€™m thinking suddenly? Iā€™ve just spent the last two years having my mind pulled apart at a momentā€™s notice. All that I want is for everyone to stop trying to get into my head because I donā€™t want anyone in there ever again. Got it? Itā€™s none of your business what Iā€™m thinking.ā€
Dimly, he registers that Oliver has gone pale as he starts to understand what Marcus means. The healer looks appalled, because evidently, this was something undetectable while he was unconscious, and heā€™s beyond lashing out, because this has hit places he doesnā€™t want to go.
ā€œGet out.ā€ The words are quieter still, and thereā€™s a flat, dulled down, deadly note to them.
Even half-conscious on a bed, drugged by the potion, it leaves to question what Marcus is capable of, the one thing no one has dared to think about so far. Itā€™s a weak threat, but his voice carries all of it, like itā€™s every atom of a star at the moment of destruction.
The healer leaves. Oliver doesnā€™t, because Oliver hasnā€™t learned to be afraid of him, even though he should have.
When Marcus looks at him again, he thinks that he sees Oliver flinch, just a little around the eyes, and he knows heā€™s going to say something unforgivable if he isnā€™t left alone. ā€œI meant you as well.ā€ The words are empty. You need to go before I do any more things that I regret, and I canā€™t live with any more.
Oliver doesnā€™t listen. Instead, he does something that Marcus can handle even less. He climbs onto the bed and rests there next to him, close enough for Marcus to feel him breathe. ā€œYouā€™re really not a good listener, Flint. I already told you. Iā€™m not leaving.ā€
Marcusā€™ hands suddenly feel too heavy, utterly ineffectual when he tries to raise them to push Wood right off the bed. Land on his arse. Thatā€™ll show him. Instead, his head starts to nod forward, and Oliver, the scheming bastard, must have known that the potion would take effect soon, had kept him talking until he had no choice but to go back to sleep again.
Heā€™s so angry. Heā€™s exhausted. Heā€™s repeating the same cycle, inescapable, stuck on a loop of his own making. Thereā€™s wool against his face, something warm against his back. Oliverā€™s voice is there, he can feel it rumble in his chest, but the words donā€™t even register. Itā€™s a warm sound, like copper and firelight, and itā€™s the last thing in his dwindling awareness before the world is lost altogether.
The frightening part is that heā€™s starting to want to wake up again.Ā
That wasnā€™t how it was supposed to go.

A Comprehensive Guide to Archive of Our Own Filters
Itā€™s complicated, I know. Iā€™ve been using the website for years and thereā€™s still stuff I donā€™t understand! I thought itā€™d be a nice idea to add a little guide for the filters on here for all those who need it. Enjoy!
What is Archive of Our Own?
Archive of Our Own, called Ao3 for short, is an ā€œarchive for transformative fanworks, like fanfiction, fanart, fan videos, and podfic.ā€ (Official Statement on the website.) Itā€™s a place where fans can find and enjoy work from the others within their own fandom, as well as upload their own work!
What are Filters?
On Ao3, Filters allow users to narrow down their searches so that they can find the specific things theyā€™re looking for. BUT, the Filtering system ā€” as well as the tagging system ā€” on Ao3 can get a little complicated.
Thatā€™s what this guide is for, so continue on!
Understanding Filters
After selecting a fandom to search in, youā€™ll see the following image, slightly varied depending on if youā€™re on desktop or mobile:
(Iā€™m on mobile and I used the Naruto fandom as an example.)
Tumblr media
Upon clicking the Filters button, youā€™ll see a number of choices and drop-down menus:
Tumblr media
Iā€™ll be going over these in order!
What is Sort By?
The first option you see is the Sort By menu. Upon clicking the drop-down menu, there are nine things to choose from. What Sort By allows you to do, is choose the order you want your search results to appear in. If, for example, you want the longest fanfics with a bunch of words to appear first, you would click the Word Count option.
If you want the most recently updated fanfics to appear first, you would click the Date Updated option. If you want the fanfics to appear in an alphabetical order (A-Z), you would either click Title or Author.
NOTE:Ā
Numerical Order ā€” Word Count, Hits, Kudos, Comments, Bookmarks.
Alphabetical Order ā€” Author, Title.
Chronological Order ā€” Date Posted, Date Updated.
Include or Exclude?
After Sort By, there are two sections: Include and Exclude.
If there are tags you want to see, make sure to select them under the Include section.
BUT, if there are tags you do NOT want to see, select them under the Exclude section.
What are Ratings?
Content ratings are used for games, TV shows, and movies. They rate how suitable the work is for its audience, and Ao3 does the same.
Ratings are as follows from most widely suitable to least suitable:
General Audiences - E for everyone can read it!
Teen and Up Audiences - 15 and up, leave the children behind.
Mature - 18 and up, sorry teens, adults only!
Explicit - Even some of the adults left the room. šŸ¤
Not Rated - In limbo, the author decided not to use a rating.
What are Warnings?
Warnings are assigned to works that contain triggering content that can make readers upset or uncomfortable.
Ao3 Warnings are as follows:
Major Character Death - If a work includes an important character death that doesnā€™t happen in the source material.
Graphic Depictions of Violence - If a work includes gruesome scenes, blood, murder, death, torture, or fighting.
Underage - If a work includes minors participating in illegal acts, specifically regarding sex.
Rape/Non-Con - If a work includes scenes where non-consensual sex takes place.
No Archive Warnings Apply - None of the above warnings are included in the work.
Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings - For one reason or another, the creator does not disclose the warnings in the tags, or the warnings just donā€™t apply.
What are the Categories?
Ao3 Categories allow you to pick the relationship dynamics you wish to search for, or exclude from your search. They are as follows:
M/M - Two male characters in a relationship.
F/F - Two female characters in a relationship.
F/M - One female character and one male character in a relationship.
Multi - More than one kind of relationship and/or a relationship with more than two people.
Other - A relationship thatā€™s not covered by the above categories.
Gen - Fics that arenā€™t primarily about shipping or explore different types of character relationships.
What are the Fandoms?
Obviously, fandoms are the different fan communities for pieces of entertainment media (musicians, games, tv, anime, etc.) Since you usually select the Fandom you want before filtering, this might confuse you, but it does have a purpose.
The Fandoms section allows you to choose other fandoms within the one youā€™re searching for. This is for crossover fanfics, or fics that take inspiration and story elements from more than one source material.
When you click the Fandoms tab, it shows you the top ten most used fandom tags under the fandom youā€™ve already picked. My example fandom was Naruto, so Naruto is the first fandom that shows up.
What are Characters?
The Characters tab shows you the characters in the source material of the fandom youā€™re looking in. It shows the top ten most used character tags within your search and the amount of fics that they are tagged for in parenthesis.
Select their names to include/exclude different characters.
What are Relationships?
Under the Relationships tab, it shows you the top ten most used relationship tags for the characters within your fandom. The relationships might include characters from other fandoms as well as the commonly written Blank Character/Reader or Blank Character/Original Character fanfics, if thatā€™s what youā€™re looking for.
Select any of them to include/exclude from your search.
What are Additional Tags?
When you click Additional Tags, it shows the top ten most used tags in general for your fandom that donā€™t apply to the prior sections. Here, youā€™ll probably find the Alternate Universe tags, the Angst tag, the Fluff tag, and other common subjects found in your fandomā€™s fanfiction community.
Other Tags To Include/Exclude?
If the tag youā€™re looking for couldnā€™t be found in the previous options, then type it into the Other Tags search bar and youā€™ll likely find it. If it's a common tag, then itā€™ll show in an autofill selection pop-up underneath the search bar. If it doesnā€™t show up there, then you can still type it in yourself and see if you can find any fanfics that fit your search.
...
Now, after all that, thereā€™s still a few more things to tackle, and that would be the More Options section. Under More Options, there are miscellaneous things you can choose to further refine your search.
Crossovers?
We talked about crossovers earlier! Under this section, you can choose one of three options: Include Crossovers, Exclude Crossovers, and Show Only Crossovers.
Include Crossovers allows crossover fanfics into your search, Exclude Crossovers removes crossover fanfics from your search, and Show Only Crossovers is for if youā€™re only searching for crossover fanfics.
What is Completion Status?
Completion Status is how much of a work is finished. Here, you have three options: All Works, Complete Works Only, and Works in Progress only.
All Works includes both complete and incomplete works in your search. Complete Works Only filters out any works that are not finished. Works in Progress Only filters out any works that are finished.
What is Word Count?
Under Word Count, you can decide how long you want the fanfics in your search results to be. Depending on the amount of words you specify, it will filter out any fanfics that do not fit into your range.
There are two search bars. The first search bar is labelled From. The second is labelled To.
If you put a number in the From search bar, your search results will only show you fanfics with a word count that is equal to and more than the number you searched for.
If you put a number in the To search bar, your search results will only show you fanfics with a word count that is equal to and less than the number you searched for.
Putting numbers in both search bars will give you fanfics with a word count that falls between the two numbers.
What is Date Updated?
Under Date Updated, you can search for works that were updated within a specific time period.
Like the Word Count tab, there is a From search bar and a To search bar. Clicking on either of these search bars should cause a mini calendar to pop up, where you can select the date that you want to specify.
If, for some reason, that does not happen, then the date format should look like this: YYYY-MM-DD.
If you put a date in the From search bar, your search results will only show you fanfics that have been updated on that date and afterwards.
If you put a date in the To search bar, your search results will only show you fanfics that have been updated on that date and previous.
Putting dates in both search bars will give you fanfics that have been updated within the time span you have searched for.
What is Search Within Results?
The Search Within ResultsĀ search bar allows you to further specify what you want. Here, after you select all your tags, any thing you put in this search bar will be found in the title or summaryĀ of your search results. You can search for specific authors or specific phrases, if you want. NOTE: all the stories you search for will have all the tags you selected.
Thereā€™s a small blue question mark next to where it says Search Within Results, and that gives you instructions on how to use special characters/symbols to include or exclude which words youā€™d like or would not like to find.
What is Language?
After choosing all the different tags and all of that, you have your last selection option. Here, youā€™ll see a drop-down menu where you can choose one language that you want all of your search results to be in.
Andddā€¦ done!
When youā€™re ready, click the Sort and Filter button and your search results will pop up!
I hope A Comprehensive Guide to Ao3 Filters has been helpful for anyone confused about the filters and search options. If youā€™ve got anymore questions, donā€™t be afraid to ask.

Christine Iā€™m looking for information on link building using social media and how I can effectively use social media to grow our Search Engine Optimization (SEO). šŸ’¬šŸ—Ø
Peter Try ā€œThe Art of Social Mediaā€ by Guy Kawasaki. Itā€™s not written from an SEO perspective, of course. Itā€™s really about optimizing your social media channels and getting the most out of them, but itā€™s got useful tips on engagement on social. If you can be engaging on social, you can influence your rankings indirectly through all the traffic you send to your site from social posts.
Christine āœļø Great! Thank you!
Jay You can't link build with social media, but you can have strategies for awareness and brand mentions which does help Search Engine Optimization (SEO) somewhat but only for your brand. If you don't have a brand and just have a generic web siteā€¦ social media is not going to get you long lasting results.
Christine āœļø Thanks for the reply and info. We are hoping to use social media to better establish and grow our brand. We have a number of things that weā€™d like to roll out over the next couple of months, so Iā€™m trying to learn as much as possible so I donā€™t waste any opportunities. Do mentions have any direct effect or does that solely help awareness and traffic? Jay It's not direct, but I believe Google keeps an awareness of brand mention across the major social platforms. There's no way to know absolutely how their algorithm takes it into account, but from what I understand it does help. The problem with social media is that there's no link permanence and individual account values can't be corroborated easily by Google. However, it is a good way to both jump-start awareness as well as garnering opportunities for attracting web links that do matter in the long term. If you focus on social, your primary efforts will be: Page creation & maintenance on Facebook. Don't focus on post volume at first, focus on post quality and engagement. Make sure your posts are both attractive and interesting and trigger engagement from anyone seeing the post. This will fuel Facebook to show your page posts to more people more often. Facebook's algorithms are based primarily on engagement. If your brand/business has a visual angle to it take advantage of Instagram. Again, quality over quantity. Make people stop scrolling to want to look at your photos & like them. Pinterest is OK but doesn't usually drive social value. Twitter is good if you have truly interesting and unique things to say. All of these social platforms require regular attention, especially early on as you build up a following. Create a blog and add 2-3 posts to it weekly. Interesting topics, nothing bland. If you Google the topic you want to talk about and 8,000 other sites already have the same article with basically the same information you plan to post - write about something else. Or, if you have a truly distinct spin on a topic then go ahead, but you really need links to it to out-rank those who already have a foothold on the search terms related to the topic. As you build your main web site, also make sure to always focus on best practices. You don't need an SEO company to tell you what those best practices are, just Google for advice and you will find a million articles. SEO companies are good for helping you determine why you may not be ranking for specific terms, or how to lift your Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) a little higher, or to review your site to see if you are doing something wrong, or to look at technical stuff that you may not have familiarity with - like sitemap files, micro tagging, link building (the legit kind, don't fall for the mass backlink scams), HTML mark-up, etc. Christine āœļø Thank you for such a thorough response. This is helpful info!
Chris Social media signals (e.g shares, comments likes on posts that mention your brand/on your page) directly help with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) but it's not a HUGE ranking factor. There's nothing amazing or special that you can genuinely read about. Getting specific ideas to help would be optimal, your business has a lot of viral potential, think voice over (VO) competitions, posting VO work/parodies , I remember the EA sports guy going viral a while back, stuff like that will help you get a lot of mentions and grow your brand. It's all about the content you produce and how normal people will interact with it. There's a lot of reading you can do out there, but ultimately doing actual SEO would probably help you a lot more, especially if you are targeting business owners.
Christine āœļø Thanks for the response and info. Weā€™ve been tossing around some viral video ideas, but you sparked a few new thoughts from my partner.
Doug Social media, at the moment, helps with traffic and branding if you have a large enough audience and/or wallet. Besides improving dwell rate, it does nothing to ā€œhelpā€ with rankings on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).
Christine āœļø So it sounds like rolling out a well planned social strategy going for brand awareness and traffic is what we should focus on. Thank you!

Here's an interesting thought experiment: Does social media affect Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? More specifically, do your social media efforts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram et. al.) have any impact on organic rankings? Would love to get everyone's verdict in the poll and your opinions in the comments. Thank you! 66 votes 15 votes 10 votes

Marty MarionšŸŽ“ Ā» Horia From my viewpoint, if one objective is to generate more searches for keywords or phrases that are important to you, then social media can have a massive impact on stimulating searchesā€¦ and searches result in clicksā€¦ which definitely impact Search Engine Optimization (SEO)ā€¦ so I would think social media CAN affect SEO, not that it DOES all the timeā€¦ I always like to look at social media strategies as PART of a comprehensive SEO plan. šŸ’ŸšŸ‘šŸ½4
Horia That's a great argument, Marty! So I take it you see the benefits of social media from a "social engineering" point of view, where you create momentum for phrases, which in turn stimulate queries. šŸ’ŸšŸ‘šŸ½2 Marty MarionšŸŽ“ Ā» Horia Yes, stimulate intrigue, questions, etc that make people search for the specific subjects (phrases) that are most important to you and make sure your pages are super optimizedā€¦ šŸ‘šŸ½2 Lees Ā» Marty Marion Can you give us an example from the past in which you used this technique? Or is this just a theory? šŸ‘šŸ½1 Marty MarionšŸŽ“ Ā» Lees Sure. Have used it often. For a big ecommerce lingerie company we did social posts asking men to post their favorite "sexy celebrities" from the 1950s through 1980s. Searches for "sexy + lingerie type" etc went up and so did sales through organic. For a jeans company we asked "how skinny are skinny jeans for men?". Same results. Questions seem to provoke searches. šŸ‘šŸ½3
Petter I do believe that some signals are included, but not to the extent that SEO users in general should have a great understanding on how to engage the public etc. there. I believe that SEO users should work with SoMe consultants, but Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a large enough field in itself, so for my part I'm happy to let SoMe consultants take the lead there, and just see how SEO can benefit from it in the ways Marty described above (open to any venue where my clients make more money). As I see it, there are two main issues with some of the "myths" going around on how social signals has an effect on Search Engine Optimization (SEO): 1: Engagement metrics is not a direct ranking impact. If it was, then the webpages that exists to spin shareable content would win in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs), but they don't. 2: Monitoring social media is possible, but it requires a lot of resources - and Google is already tasked with monitoring everything that can be monitored - so dedicating the amount of resources needed to be on top of this makes very little sense when there are so many other signals that aren't as "fleeting" and temporary. BUT: Google does tie in Facebook business profiles to businesses, so this might in some way somewhere feed into the algorithm, but from the little research I have done - I have yet to see any correlation between rankings and active, inactive or no business profiles on ie. FB - so if there is a signal there, then as of now it cannot be a strong one. The link from your business profile on FB is nofollow - so after march 1 2020, social media profile link might start to add value. However - visible links (written URL's that goes via redirects with nofollow) may count towards a mention when/if Google picks it up. Hashtag trends is fairly available, which could make sense for Google to tie into on queries that are fresh (I believe that at least their machine learning algorithm focusing on obtaining meaning to queries ties into this in some form or way - ie. "planking" made no sense before, but then suddenly became a trend - and I believe Google wants to be relevant on such queries and the only way to be that is to stay on top of what queries might mean). And again, like Marty stated above, Social Media has the ability to provide impact on amount of brand queries as well as other queries. So it is a valuable channel for the client to pursue. But again, I believe that our clients are better off if they have someone who solely focuses on these channels helping there, leaving us SEO users to cooperate with them but at the same time keep our focus on Search Engine Optimization (SEO). šŸ“°šŸ‘ˆ

John āœļø I Agree and Disagree......I seen someresults but nothing major.šŸ‘1 Tiwari Ā» Mike It is all about quality and not the quantity. These 5 dollars bot-generated Fiverr social signal gigs are just worthless. Mike Iā€™ve compared urls that I built links to with, and without social signals, never saw 1 case where a kw rank improved due to signals. Even on less competitive branded terms. If you know a vendor who can provide a better experience Iā€™m all ears! Hays I've seen it work in for time-sensitive queries like events. I had a site ranking in the top 3 positions for a few top keywords after an event/raffle we had got shared a few hundred times and we had over 10,000 post engagements, that brought 7,000 visitors to the page in 3 days from Facebook. So within 24 hours from the post we were ranking for these keywords. 3 years later, after the event we still rank number 1 for our focus keyword which was the item we raffled. This last year's event ranks number 2 for same keyword and similar item.šŸ‘1šŸ“°šŸ‘ˆ

Roland They can help in some areas but not a requirement for success. One very useful return from posting on social media is quicker indexing of the site promoted. Keith Webpages with a significant amounts of social engagement are likely quality pieces of content that have generated a number of other Google related signals that convinces Google to rank them higher. Doubting the causation to social signals impacting ranking that much as they are so easy to manipulate. Maggie it's part of trust and authority within your niche - but Google can tell fake social signals from true engagement. It won't affect your rank negatively if you don't have them, but they help to some extent. Peter You can indirectly influence your rankings through traffic to your site from social, so Iā€™d say put out great content on social (or post links to good website content from social) that gets people wanting to visit your site. Steve Hi, it depends on what you mean by social signals, but as long as you mean getting likes/shares/etc for your content then I think it's definitely a positive factor. Here's a screenshot of a page of mine in the fitness niche: As you can see it has gathered over 2000 Fb shares and engagements over the years (I think 10k or more but Buzzsome has a 1 year limit to show, anywayā€¦ ) and this page ranks rather well in Google for its target keyword. Granted, I also managed to build a lot of white hat backlinks to it with outreach strategies and the Skyscraper Technique, but 1, even before I started link building to it I saw a nice little upward movement for it in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) after I started getting so many FB shares for it, so I think all those shares definitely sent a positive message to Google. 2, the social shares helped in one more way with Search Engine Optimization (SEO): I displayed a big Social Share Counter box on this page so that when I asked other people to link to it (you know with the outreach Skyscraper link building technique I mentioned earlier) it helped me get a "yes" from more people because they saw how popular the page was already. So I'd say bottom line: yes, social signals do help a lot with SEO both directly and indirectly. Steve P.s.: Unfortunately I got all those thousands of shares back when my site was http and not https, and since I switched to https the social signal counter doesn't really work, that's why I had to rely on Buzzsumo data as proof that you can see for yourself.šŸ“°šŸ‘ˆ

Fleming No not for SEO purposes. It's more to show users that your website gets engagement and has value its more to create user engagement.. Imagine walking past 2 shops one has customers queuing even outside, while the other has no customers whatsoever, which one are you likely to want to go in? Now some people will go to the empty one to avoid the queue however most will want to know what that shop has the other doesn't. Hope that makes sense Neil it did in my head as I wrote it lol Its also worth noting that a lot of those plugins you can change the number of likes retweets so it doesn't even reflect the real shares etc half the time. šŸ’ŸšŸ‘šŸ½5 Neil āœļø On my own website I do display the shares which may look great on some urls that get shared a lot 1000+ shares etc BUT - some urls don't get shared and then potentially have the oppositive effect - 'this url has little value' (maybe it has). Also, I do wonder whether displaying what is your website's popular pages - is this giving valuable data to competitorsā€¦ all this, without the effect of slowing down the load time (albeit hopefully minimally). Fleming I just see it as a vanity metric who cares if it was shared 1200 times if only 5 read the whole thing and got anything from it? Its kind of like when people go yeah my video was view 10k times but only 4 got past the 30 seconds. Daine Ā» Christopher is right, it is a vanity metric to a degree. But, hereā€™s the thing. It has value because: 1. Social Proof: It encourages other people to share it, thus expanding your reach, audience, and traffic. 2. It builds authority and credibility. It shows that the piece is popular. 3. It has a hidden SEO benefit, because when conducting link outreach, posts that have been shared a lot convey popularity, and value, in turn helping to increase the chances of gaining a link. People are more inclined to link to popular content. 4. It encourages people to read it more, due to social proof. Social proof is very powerful, psychologically. 5. Social signals MAY play a small part in ranking. šŸ’ŸšŸ‘šŸ½12
Neil āœļø THAT is my gut feeling - and why I have stuck with itā€¦ Hazi Social proof. Fleming Does it hold much value though? when social proof can be easily manipulated as most plugins you can add the share counts etc? Daine Itā€™s more ā€˜perceivedā€™ value, rather than real value. Fleming Ā» Daine yeah more a trust signal kind of thing. Daine Ā» Christopher , yeah, exactly. Lancaster Perception is reality and the only reality is the one your visitor chooses to believe when they are on your website.
Micha Ā» Daine Iā€™d go with on this one, with these additions: 6: each share is a potential batch of new readers, therefore, possible links 7: BuzzSumo recently did a study of over a million datapoints and discovered sharing on social media is half of what it used to be. Whether thatā€™s an ongoing trend or not, FOMO, likeability, credibility and the ā€œfollow the herdā€ effects are all indisputable market persuaders.šŸ“°šŸ‘ˆ

Shubham Ā» Janka āœ”ļø Ronald Ā» Janka lol, thats society in general though šŸ‘šŸ½1
Fouad Why being disappointed? I think he explained it very well. šŸ‘šŸ½1 Doug At the moment, there is no evidence to suggest that social shares directly help improve the ranking of a website. To my understanding, it might help with User engagement if itā€™s compelling content... which would likely help with rankings. (Arguably if itā€™s compelling content it would likely rank well anyway outside of social shares). Also, it might help get a page indexed that is currently not. Social Likes and Shares are too easy to spam and manipulate. The only thing I could see Google doing in the future is assigning authority or credibility to individuals who share content based on their voice within a certain community/industry... that might be an interesting (albeit somewhat concerning) progression on this topic. šŸ‘šŸ½6 Bhati I have site which get traffic from Google and only links it has are from facebook shares. šŸ‘šŸ½3
Owais Ā» Bhati What type content the website shares? Bhati Ā» Owais viral articles, political, national news. I have multiple sites. šŸ‘šŸ½1
Farhat yup, social share is very important, it helps your URL to indexed and make engagement with the audience, which helps Google bot to understand your content is useful to users. šŸ’Ÿ1
Carl Ā» Farhat agreed i have a 50k sku ecommerce store we get lots of social shares
Kevin To explain it simply : Bot shares won't help SEO, because it won't drive traffic. But real human share will benefit to SEO BECAUSE it will drive traffric in the end. But this is not the number of shares / likes that matters but rather the fact that it drives traffic or no. In others words, you would better have a 1K shared post that drive 50% traffic than a 20k shared post driving 2% traffic. šŸ‘šŸ½4 Smith There's no evidence that there's SEO traffic because of the social shares. He is right. It's the other way. You get more social shares because of your SEO traffic. And that makes sense. šŸ‘šŸ½4 Suraj Only believe on your experience, there are share only there review. Toth They're an indirect factor. Way too easily gamed to be a direct factor, for Google anyhow. šŸ‘šŸ½4 Hazra It certainly doesn't have any impact for info post. Social shares helps to gain more visibility which indirectly increases the chance of getting natural back links. That's it.. šŸ‘šŸ½2 Homer He's wrong. Social shares are social signals, and will affect both indexing and ranking. It won't get you to page one alone, but it will make a difference. šŸ‘šŸ½1
Hamid but you can't say that they are impacting directly to your rankings. šŸ‘šŸ½1 Homer Ā» Hamid Yes, because I have had sites move up from page 10 to page 5. They are. šŸ‘šŸ½1 Hamid Ā» Homer Great, so how do you monitor that really due to socials this happened? Homer Ā» Hamid On the sites that this happened on, I only had social signals going to them. The content was also old and had quite jumping around in the SERPS. The site also had no real traffic going to it. I always start link building with social signals only, meaning that there was no other factor.

Nabil It depends on how hard to rank for the keyword yet how powerful and specific your website, last but not the least how's your website's technical Search Engine Optimization (SEO) status. Arif If you're not an instant-lover, or you're not in rush, well... yes you can. but if you are, well this method doesn't suit you. Roger You can rank an article with just dummy text and no backlist but, for that to happen, there are certain variables that need to occur and, one of the most important is keyword difficulty/competition. Oliver There is absolutely NO evidence that social signals are being used by Google as a direct ranking factor. šŸ‘šŸ½1 Tanvir I think yes .. it depends on the content you have ... like if you have good content and people visit your site from the social site ... and then they create backlink ... then yes you can rank šŸ˜ƒ Joe Ive been doing this for 20 years and love the variety of opinions here. In various ways there is a tiny bit of truth to many of them, but Oliver states the truth. That being said other items on the page will affect the ranking. Social signals alone will do nothing for you. Social signals combined with other things like a great description in the social post or key technical aspects of the page will get additional people to click and visit so while you may think you did it with social signals, it is misleading. No one strategy is good all by itself. That is something Google frowns upon. you need multiple strategies and techniques. Above all you need kickass content which drives traffic and engagement. you might have zero backlinks and crappy technical but if your content rocks, you have people visiting, staying and engaging, Google will still rank you. their priority is the searcher and giving them the best results for their query šŸ‘šŸ½1 Jim Ranked for this, no backlinks bro

Mike I never buy social links... at least not from an SEO perspective. I might approach someone with a significant following about advertising with them, but that is for the traffic, not any Search Engine Optimization (SEO) benefit. Not sure what you mean by buying blog posts. If you mean posts for your own site, I regularly pay writers to create content. If you mean guest posts on other sites, I pay for those frequently, but never through anyone selling them as a service. šŸ‘šŸ½8
Wren Ā» Mike wow so interesting. How do you go about advertising with someone with a significant following, do you get them to share your product and do they have to declare that it's a paid promotion? Mike Ā» Wren Depends on the situation and what we are promoting. Sometimes, I might have a client willing to sponsor a YouTube video in exchange for the content creator doing one of those typical 15-30 second pitches you see on a lot of videos. In those cases, a sample of the product or a few products will be sent to them to use in the video. Stuff like that. It's never a video 100% devoted just to the product or service. Instead we sponsor one of their videos they are already doing. Wren Ā» Mike ok, so does that mean they don't to say they have been paid for it. Mike Ā» Wren They will say something like, "this video is sponsored by...." Wren Ā» Mike ok cool. Cheers for sharing this with me. šŸ‘šŸ½1
Singh It is not a good idea to buy a social link....in a long run it can affect your website very badly šŸ‘šŸ½3
Olga āœļø Ā» Singh how's that? Singh The purchased social links are likely bots or inactive accounts, so they won't engage with your posts. Also, because you have small numbers, try sharing viral posts from similar parenting pages Ammar āœļø Noted, What are your thoughts on post styling? are they good or do i need to change anything? Eva Ā» Ammar I think the styling of the image is good. Just a couple of things. 1. This post, for example, [product image] I recommend that instead of writing about the business, you explain what this product actually is and how it can help a mum. 2. On Facebook don't use hashtags. 3. Try to limit the posts you have with links to an external website. Facebook likes to keep people on Facebook, not clicking out somewhere else. This one, for example, [quote image] Instead of writing about the business, write something that resonates with a mother, 'Do you feel like you need to keep your eyes open with matchsticks at the moment? Don't worry, babies start to figure out night and day by 3 weeks so (hopefully) you can get a little more sleep. Remember too, you'll have a different audience on Facebook and Instagram so try to share different content on each. Try and find a parenting group and ask mums with newborns what their challenges are and craft content around that. For each product you promote, relate it to the mother. What problem can it fix? How can it help them get more sleep? How can it help their baby sleep more? How can it fix their sore back? How can it help with breastfeeding and helping them get more milk? But also, share humor, Facebook users love humor that relates to their situation. With Instagram hashtags, look at what your competitors or similar businesses are using. Click into the hashtags, have a look at the content that is being shared and what's getting the best engagement. Ammar āœļø These info's are gem, thanks a lot!

šŸ”—šŸ¹ Gergo My opinion: There are different tactics to use for different platform. Niche website built for organic traffic-turns into product selling, or other monetization methods. IG is not a platform for niche site-building, it is for entertainment! My point is, try to look for user intent perspective. People generally not using IG for finding any product to buyā€¦ imo. Another key issue is IG is full of bots, my friend tested and built 6000 followers in 3 months on a personal account with a simple codeā€¦ yes it got banned, but we just wanted to see how far it goesā€¦ I assume your follower base probably full of those bots, commenting, like-ing anything, but its not a real audience with intent to buy. Haven't looked for deeper atm, but there is a huge different building a site and getting 2k traffic and converting into sales, as having as IG account and 2k followersā€¦ Sebastian Very interested. Andrei No, social media links are nofollow and do not pass link juice. Useless for SEO. šŸ‘1
Ethan Ā» Andrei that's not entirely true. The main argument being that social media doesn't directly affect your SEO. However, it does have an impact on the factors that do affect rankings such as traffic, meaning it indirectly affects your rankings. So, it may not directly increase your seo or provide backlinks but it definitely please a role in your seo ranking and should be utilized for best practices. šŸ‘5 Andrei Ā» Ethan sure, but that kind of argument can be made for any type of marketing, including paid ads. You gotta draw the line somewhere and say this is an SEO job and that is something else. Back to the question at hand, having a genuine, well maintained social media profile is a must for most businesses and will marginally contribute to your search performance. Having a backlinked social media account sitting idle is not going to contribute to your seo. šŸ‘1 Ethan Ā» Andrei true and I see your point there. However, social media plays a massive role indirectly with your SEO. I mean social platforms have there own search engines after all so this plays as another way to provide your company with more traffic to increase SEO. We all know how important local seo is and you might as well forget about it unless you have a social media presence. Social profiles will also ranking on Google so if you want to draw a line, then technically your now creating seo for your social profile and ranking on Google with it. Don't forget about how much content is shared through social media as well šŸ‘2 Andrei Ā» Ethan all good points! Although I think social media is not exactly critical for local seo. Is it? There is GMB and schema and some local directories. Never seen social media on this list. šŸ‘1 Andrei Ā» Ethan I feel like we are arguing, so I wanted to stress that I'm not, this is how I express curiosity. It might come off arguing-ish since my first language is russian šŸ™‚ šŸ‘1 Ethan Ā» Andrei I am not arguing either but I am glad that your clarified. I hate how facebook is used so much for that šŸ™„. I am curious as well and want to always better my skill and knowledge with SEO. I enjoy general conversations about it. True, but most if not all of those that rank without social media have been around since the dawn of google. If you take a new company and try to start ranking, it would be much much harder without social media platforms. If you were to take the same company and start with social media from day one, they are much more likely to start ranking on google faster and higher. šŸ‘1 Swanson Ā» Andrei I treat social media as another directory to update for locations. Will I manage your profile and post for you? No. But I want to make sure that your locations are listed correctly, that the descriptions and contact info is consistent with the rest of your web presence. I tell clients itā€™s just another channel you can use to present content they are adding for their site. šŸ‘1
Ryan Let's say you are a taxidermist in a city of 1,000 people. You have one competitor.. All else being the same, your competitor has a website of the same quality as yours. If you have optimized Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and let's say you posted 50 posts, my guess is you would be ranking ahead of your competitor. It's not like an Instagram account will rank you, but in most cases it's common sense to have one, probably worth the 5 mins it takes to set it up. You're establishing your brand online. Could you go without it, of course. šŸ‘2 Russ I just don't get why Instagram is so popular lolā€¦ You cannot put links in posts, which just seems daft and pointlessā€¦ So if someone posts something that looks interesting, no way to find out more, you have to Google it for more info. So no backlink SEO benefit either. you cannot even share/re-post other people's posts from the app, you have to get another 3rd party app to do that. šŸ“°šŸ‘ˆ

Short answer: donā€™t do it
Long answer:
Pros: mutuals might tag things for you
Cons: anyone who stumbles across your profile will be able to see them and a lot of people donā€™t have good intentions
What you can do instead: Tumblr has a feature where you can block words/phrases/letter combinations in posts that havenā€™t been tagged. I donā€™t think you can access it in the app but you definitely can on the actual website.
Go to your settings
Tumblr media
Select account settings
Tumblr media
Scroll down to filtering where you can find a section to filter tags and to filter content. If people arenā€™t properly tagging for your thing, youā€™ll want to go to the filtering content section.
Tumblr media
Hit the edit button and add the phrases you want blocked.
Tumblr media
If youā€™re not familiar with how posts with blocked tags appear on Tumblr, what it does is give you a little message when you scroll by that says ā€œthis body contains (this blocked phrase)ā€ above a button that lets you see the post anyway if you want, but you wonā€™t be stumbling across posts that trigger you with no warning.
Hope this helps, but please donā€™t put your triggers in your bio!
